Kai Fischer’s “cash register receipts” are reinterpretations of historical still lifes. For After Caravaggio and After Cézanne, the artist purchased the “ingredients” – such as figs, peaches and grapes – for each painting in typical local shops. The enlarged receipts are representative of works that are important to history of art. At the same time, they reflect the “commodity input” necessary for the imagined still life, which stands in stark contrast to the values of the original paintings.
Fischer’s decidedly humorous process also picks up on serious contemporary topics, such as the constant availability of goods in Western consumer societies in contrast to the original paintings where food symbolises the transience of life.
