The work Conditional Power (1.6 million) by the artist group terra0 consists of two parts and can be seen as a conceptual artwork in terms of its underlying idea and handling. It consists of both an NFT and a physical object, comprising a framed print of a photograph of the Greenland Ice Sheet and the following text: ‘If the Greenland Surface Melt Extent surpasses 1.6 million square kilometres, this NFT burns itself.’ Thus, the artwork describes its own content and emphasises that its existence is closely linked to current global warming and the climate crisis. A central component of the work is the obligation of the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection to burn the physical object when the NFT has destroyed itself once the described conditions have occurred. All that remains is an empty frame. Both in its intact and destroyed state, the artwork vividly demonstrates the importance of sustainability for our future. Conditional Power (1.6 million) is part of the ongoing exploration by the artist and research group terra0 of the connection between physical realities and existing token economies.
