In his paintings and photo series, Sergio Fermariello deals with the urban and landscape environment of his hometown of Naples. The work Vietri sul Mare is named after the town of the same name near Salerno, which opens up the famous Amalfi Coast. The work, kept in black and white, gives the impression of a rasterized photo, but the small squares are irregularly executed as acrylic painting on canvas. The grid-like resolution of the sky, figure, and landscape allows the motif to be recognized only from a greater distance: a man and a woman stand at a railing, perhaps in front of the dreamlike backdrop of the Amalfi Coast? What the two are looking at is left to the imagination of the viewer. Sergio Fermariello is interested in individual as well as collective memories and longings. The artist is particularly fascinated by those moments and emotions that can be considered fundamentally human or archaic, and the question of how these can be illustrated with the help of art.
