Love Will Tear Us Apart. The ambiguity of a strong emotion

until November 1st 2026

Kunstmuseum Reutlingen  Spendhaus

LOVE, as an existential and powerful emotion, lies at the centre of human existence. Using Edvard Munch’s famous woodcut The Kiss as its starting point, we scrutinise the often-romanticized interpretations of depictions of love. As a result, we advocate for the inherent ambiguity in the artworks presented here foregrounding discourses on power and gender relations, the (de)construction of relationships and sexual identity. This showcase includes 20th-century woodcuts as well as examples of contemporary works across varying mediums. In this field of negotiation contemporary artists such as Amit Berlowitz, Jérémie Danon or Nino Bulling explore love in the social and personal realm through their work. Through these and other artistic reflections, artworks from the collection are re-contextualised and seen in a different light.
Love Will Tear Us Apart is an exhibition exploring the visual ambiguity of love and demonstrates how multifaceted and political this powerful emotion is. (Text Kunstmuseum Reutlingen Spendhaus Homepage)
