Rupprecht Geiger is among the foremost representatives of color field painting in Germany. For more than fifty years, he has taken the interrelation of picture, wall surface and surrounding space as his theme. With its pictorial construction of large surfaced forms in pure, sometimes changing colors, his work connects with the form of ‘color field painting’ which explored the expansion of the color surface beyond the limits of the canvas. His works are primarily composed in the warm spectrum of a red color scheme. Geiger’s color fields are distinguished by intense colors and a strict, sometimes elliptical form with a marked meditative character. Geiger is capable of heightening color, which he sometimes applies to the painting surface using a spray can and spray technique or translates into silkscreen printing, to create brilliant surfaces.
