Cars meet Art. The Unimog-Museum Gaggenau exhibits under the title Art and Cars representative car-related works from the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection.

The Corporate Collection was started in 1977 and has expanded continuously since then to approximately 1800 works by about 600 artists. It reflects the 20th century’s key abstract-constructive, conceptual or minimalist approaches to pictures. But the collection has always included a few specially commissioned works. An important step towards internationalization in 1986 was a commission extended to Andy Warhol to mark the company’s 100th anniversary: The Cars series was to have included 80 pictures, but only 36 pictures and 13 drawings had been completed when the artist died in 1987. A second commission went to the New York artist Robert Longo, who produced a series of five black-and-white ‘portraits’ and a full-wall airbrush painting of Mercedes-Benz models from 1995–1998.

Selected works of art by Warhol and Longo are on display at the Unimog Museum Gaggenau. The show is completed with a selection of collages, objects, sculptures and videos showing various variations in terms of subject matter and media on the theme of “Art and Cars”. Gerold Miller’s frame-wall sculptures treated with car paint attempt a topical response to the surface orientated aesthetics of the Pop-art era. Design objects by Vincent Szarek and wall sculpture based on an industrial shining material by Ulrike Flaig reflect the spectrum of contemporary ideas, along with Sylvie Fleury’s and Kirsten Mosher’s video works, arranged in series in each case.
