The Collection Ileana Sonnabend, New York, in Dialogue with the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection
Private/Corporate II is the second of a series of exhibitions in which the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection intends to conduct dialogues with international private collections. The exhibition planned in collaboration with Sonnabend Collection emerged from looking at our existing art holdings through the eyes of a related collecting interest. Visitors can see work ranging from 1960 to the present day. Around 30 pictures, objects, sculptures, drawings and photographs offer an impressive survey of current artistic ideas.
The Sonnabend Collection emerged from the gallery founded jointly by Ileana Sonnabend and her first husband Leo Castelli in New York in 1954. It developed constantly, from 1962 with her second husband, Michael Sonnabend, in Paris, in the field of tension between American and European artistic developments. The Sonnabend Gallery, active in New York again from 1971, helped to pave the way for many of the major art movements after 1945. So the Collection is correspondingly wide-ranging: it provides an interface for the mutual areas of influence of European and American developments with its fondness for and interest in conceptual art, object art and installative works.
From the Sonnabend Collection: Bernd and Hilla Becher (D), Ashley Bickerton (USA), Mel Bochner (USA), Donald Judd (USA), Clay Ketter (USA), Jeff Koons (USA), John McCracken (USA), Robert Morris (USA), Bruce Nauman (USA), Rona Pondick (USA), Haim Steinbach (USA), Andy Warhol (USA), Matthew Weinstein(USA)
