Andy Warhol’s Cars series, created for Mercedes-Benz in 1986/87, illustrates the history of the automobile from the Benz Patent Motor Car and the Daimler Motor Coach from 1886 to other iconic vehicles in the brand’s history right up to the 1980s. The artist was commissioned to produce these works to mark the 100th birthday of the automobile. The centerpiece of the Cars series is the car as a status symbol in an expanding consumer society. With his artistic genre generally known as Pop Art, Warhol primarily traces the social influence of stars, brands and products.
Andy Warhol was successful as a graphic artist, painter, and filmmaker, and is considered a co-founder and leading figure in Pop Art. His studio, called The Factory, was a meeting place for the creative scene in New York.
