From 1960 to the mid 1970s, Ferdinand Kriwet was at the heart of the Düsseldorf art scene around Gerhard Richter and Günther Uecker. Kriwet and Uecker founded the still legendary “Creamcheese”, a venue that was both a bar and an exhibition gallery that the founder of documenta, Arnold Bode, even called Gesamtkunstwerk. For example, an ensemble of TV monitors decorated one wall, as a tribute to Andy Warhol. Kriwet’s Car Serie belongs to the Text-Kreis Sequenzen [Text-circle progressions] series, based on a circle divided into multiple segments. A text was applied to this in the form of letters cut, divided and placed along the circle lines; this creates a form that is decipherable but makes an ornamental effect.
