Daniel Buren
Ein Tanz mit einem Quadrat, N° 47 C, 1989

  • Adhesive paper, metal, glas
  • 315 x 315 cm
  • Acquired in 1990

Rejecting the traditional painting Daniel Buren developed in the 1960s a method to create premises for aesthetic perception without giving narrative forms or fixed meanings. He exclusively uses vertical bars, alternating white and colored on paper or canvas, measurering 8,7 cm. Since the late 1960s Buren systematically designs wall areas with his bar sequences, intervenes in architecture both indoors and outdoors so he temporarily modifies places, exhibition rooms and museums. Ein Tanz mit einem Quadrat [A dance with a square] is part of Buren’s mobile works and can be attached to different wall areas. There the square around which are dancing 15 frames consists as largest possible of the respectively given wall.
