As a follow-on project to Andy Warhol’s Cars series in the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection, the artist Simone Westerwinter was commissioned to create a series of 60 name watercolors. Together, they form a ‘portrait’ of the Group as per summer 2001: the names of car models, of board members of that year, of different members of Mercedes-Benz AG staff produce a multi-colored field that is both abstract and personal. The watercolors reflect on the abstract quality of brands and logos; at the same time, the works are portraits of individuals in terms of their colors. From 110 pure color shades the person portrayed chooses his or her personal favorite color. In the case of the Mercedes-Benz cars, the decision of the majority of customers was chosen – their favorite color in 2001 being silver. Namensaquarelle have a standardized side to them: logotype, format and execution are the same, predefined like the name. With our lives, we individually color our names – as represented by the choice of colors offered by the artist. The watercolor technique brings coincidence and painting moments into play.
