Seven Pieces for One Space

The Mercedes-Benz Art Collection is founded on the artistic trends of the 20th century, which focused on the transfer and translation of aesthetic programs beyond generic boundaries. From Bauhaus artists via Zero Avantgarde through to Minimal Art in America and Europe—the foundations of our Collection—dialogue between art, architecture, music and choreography was a natural element of the protagonists’ thinking and artistic work. This outlines the historical background to this exhibition.

The starting point, however, was the matter-of-course approach of the contemporary artists to accounting for their work on the basis of discussions with, and their intimate knowledge, of the other disciplines—beyond workshops and thematic exhibitions.  This exhibition shows positions taken up by space-related art, linking various fields like fine art, music, architecture and design. Large-scale space-related works by the following artists will be shown: Isabel Mundry, composer (b. 1963, D), Andreas Schmid, artist (b. 1955, D), Peter Haimerl, architect (b. 1961, D) and Philippe Parreno, artist (b. 1964, DZ). More new aquisitions will complete the exhibition, by Are You Meaning Company, artist (b. 1973, J), Katja Davar, artist (b. 1968, GB), Albert Weis, artist (b. 1969, D). The exhibition also includes  a new large sculpture for the Potsdamer Platz by Auke de Vries, artist (b. 1937, NL).
