Heimo Zobernig’s conceptual work is founded on systems of order drawn from various contexts: the alphabet, the natural numbers, the basic colors or fundamental geometric forms. Zobernig endeavors to introduce order for himself and the beholder into the formalisms of contemporary art by laying bare the mechanisms of presentation, value-generation, and the relation between the genesis of a theory and artistic practice. At the art fair ‘Art Cologne ’92’ Heimo Zobernig created a booth especially for the gallerist Anselm Dreher. On show in a ‘white cube’ were: a bookcase, a shelf, and a shelf rack for magazines and catalogues etc., just like those present in many galleries. An empty space with empty presentation surfaces was to be seen. Consequently A1D1 was an antithetical concept contrasting with the usual flood of pictures at art fairs.
