Camille Graeser
harmonikale konstruktion, 1947/51

Camille Graeser’s harmonikale konstruktion is part of the series of works produced between 1947 and 1955. These are the oblique-angled Loxodromic Compositions addressing the notion of ‘diagonal shift’. The painting is based on a raster of 120 squares. Some squares have been accentuated by color and linked with bars. An open form complex appears on the left and a closed one on the right, between which a violet bar marks the centre axis as mediatorial element. At the same time Graeser focuses on the effect of color, which addresses as ‘pictorial sound’ the beholder’s ‘musical sensation’. harmonikale konstruktion is an experiment developing a dynamic plane and spatial network out of a bipolar order of color forms.
