In 1866, Adolf Wilhelm Wimpff founded a carriage-making factory in Stuttgart’s Bohnenviertel district. In March of 1886, Gottlieb Daimler ordered an “Americain”-type carriage from Wilhelm Wimpff & Söhne, which was delivered in August 1886. Originally intended as a gift for his wife Emma, it became the first four-wheeled automobile after Daimler installed a motor. Unlike the stationary gas-driven four-stroke motors that were the standard at the time, this motor carriage was driven by petrol combustion. Gottlieb Daimler is therefore considered to be the inventor of the four-wheeled automobile. Daimler developed the combustion engine in collaboration with Wilhelm Maybach.
