Eva Berendes’s work moves on the border between the two- and the three-dimensional object, they occupy real space but at the same time always remain pictures. The choice of materials, like wood, wool, plaster and leather, or the way they are used, refer to the applied art sphere, as an allusion to the ideas of totality advanced from the time of the Arts and Crafts movement onwards, and also during the hippie movement of the 1960s and 70s. Eva Berendes’s work uses the decorative structures of private living spaces, like for example curtains, wall hangings, mirrors or lamps. The pictures, reliefs and sculptures are cut cleanly into shape, sewn, batik dyed, scratched, bleached or melted, sometimes show signs of use.
