Monika Brandmeier

If one were to characterize the work of Monika Brandmeier in general terms, one could say that minimalist, non-literary poetics is a key feature of her sculptures, objects, drawings, photographs, and videos. The precision and energy in her work is focused on resolving three-dimensional and graphical facts that are expressed in the details and the ‘links.’ The central theme is ‘creating connections.’ Characteristic features of her sculpture Spule [spool], 2015, are the connections between materials and between the supporting structure and free graphical lines in space. Two thin aluminum plates hold two rectangular panels in position and at the same time keep them a certain distance apart. Their cross shape is echoed in the intersection of the tensioned and drawn line, which appears in front of the wall from a certain perspective. The title of the sculpture, Spule [spool], suggests a reel of thread with a long needle stuck into it that absorbs the energy of the room in the same way as a sensor does.
