The ‘making of connections’ is itself one of the central themes in the artistic work of Monika Brandmeier, connections between materials and their individual, psychological, societal use.In her work Ohne Titel [Untitled] 1995 the ‘connection’ or the materials of the steel tube trolley and the affixed paper make the apparently stable state seem delicate, or even unsteady. The supporting construction is made of a stainless-steel plate that has raised edges on its two narrow sides. 4 guide-rollers have been mounted under the plate. Over this lies a second plate that is folded down on the same sides and lies flush to the upper piece of sheeting. On one of the four steel tubes is a key stub between the tube and the pole to which a crocodile clip has been fastened. A wire rope is fixed to this, and on its bottom end a crocodile clip is also fastened, to which a sheet of paper is attached. The paper here can be understood as a potential carrier material (for content), as material on which to write or draw. It is a two-dimensional carrier of meaning, just as the empty trolley with its unused volume represents an art container for possible content.
