Andrea Zittel’s “Living Units”, mostly reduced to an area of 4-5 sqm, were initially a reaction to her cramped New York apartment in 1992. At the same time she was alluding to the furniture designs of Rodtschenko and Tatlin from the early 1920s, which also distinctly pursued the notion of practicability and functionalism. The A-Z Pit Bed exists in one version with a closed internal circular form in the artist’s California home, and a second with access to the inner circle. We want to make it clear both symbolically and physically that the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection is a public one, and we have therefore decided on the second version, with access. The midnight blue carpet that belongs to it was selected with the artist and matched to the location and its surroundings (to correspond with Daimler AG’s corporate colors).
