Melancholy, intimacy, a sensitive articulation of moods, feelings and anxieties that is more a question of facial expression and gesture than of language – slowness – euphoria and a dark sense of foreboding, all of this aptly describes the atmosphere of the photographs and video projects of Amit Berlowitz. Her photographs all refer to video projects, to which they are companion works. Woods begins with the camera following a young couple through a piece of night-time woodland. The man walks ahead, and the woman sometimes pauses, looking around her and off into the distance. Few words pass between them. They meet a young man at a campfire, stopping without saying a word. The girl’s male friend falls asleep, and a passionate amorous adventure transpires between the stranger and the girl, also with barely any words being exchanged. Cut to the girl awaking the next morning; gets up and looks at the slumbering young men.
