Following the major exhibition in the Museum für Neue Kunst | ZKM (Center for Art and Medi Technology) in Karlsruhe, Germany, this representative selection of works from the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection will now have a second venue in the Detroit Institute of the Arts. A total of 150 works by some 80 artists will be shown, from classical paintings of the forties through Andy Warhol to contemporary renowned and as well yet less known protagonists of young international art. The selection will include paintings, drawings, sculptures, wall objects, photography and video art by European and American artists, plus a selection of protagonists of African and Australian art.

For the Detroit Institute of the Arts, the Mercedes-Benz Corporate Art Department has selected works from the Collection half of which represent classical aspects related to Bauhaus traditions, to Constructivist and Concrete Art from the 1940s to the 1960s as well as to European ZERO art and international Minimalism of the sixties (Josef Albers, Gene Davis, Adolf Fleischmann, Günter Fruhtrunk, John McLaughlin, François Morellet, Robert Ryman, Oskar Schlemmer, Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart and others).

The second part of the exhibition will be dedicated to European and American art from the 1970s until today, i.e. artists who further develop the abstract avant-garde trends with different accents (John M Armleder, Daniel Buren, Sylvie Fleury, Peter Halley, Imi Knoebel, Gerold Miller, Olivier Mosset, Michael Zahn, and others). In addition, some five pictures from Andy Warhol’s Cars series as well commissioned works by Robert Longo and Simone Westerwinter will be shown.

The Detroit exhibition is the second stop on a world tour of the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection. Afterwards, selected works of art from the Corporate’s Collection will continue on to South Africa.
